Oxidizers are used to convert pollutants or VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into CO2 and water vapor. VOCs are created during some manufacturing processes. Those VOCs are released into the atmosphere through exhaust unless they are oxidized or otherwise filtered. The oxidation process requires the pollutants to be heated to a certain temperature to break down the VOCs.
Astec makes two different types of oxidizers: thermal oxidizers and catalytic oxidizers. Both are extremely effective in destroying VOCs, over 99% effective. Oxidizers are also referred to as fume incinerators.
Heat exchangers are used to boost the thermal efficiency of oxidizers by recuperating or recovering the waste heat that would otherwise be lost to the atmosphere. The recovered waste heat can be used to preheat the incoming exhaust to the oxidizer. This reduces the amount of fuel used for the oxidizer burner. Recovered waste heat can also be used for other purposes in the facility, such as comfort air in the facility.
